How to Ship Oversized and Project Cargo From China
Not every shipment fits inside a standard shipping container.
Industrial equipment, machinery, construction components and other large cargo may exceed the dimensions or loading limitations of standard containers. These shipments require more detailed planning than ordinary containerized cargo.
What Is OOG Cargo?
OOG means Out of Gauge. It refers to cargo that exceeds the standard dimensions of a container, for example because it is too wide, too high or otherwise unsuitable for loading inside a standard closed container.
Depending on the cargo dimensions and characteristics, different equipment or transportation methods may be required.
Flat Rack Containers
Flat Rack containers are commonly used for heavy or oversized cargo that cannot fit inside a standard container. They can be suitable for cargo such as:
- Industrial machinery
- Large equipment
- Steel structures
- Construction equipment
- Oversized components
Cargo dimensions, weight, lifting points and securing requirements should be reviewed before booking.
Open Top Containers
Open Top containers can be useful when cargo is too high to load through the doors of a standard container or needs to be loaded from above. Cranes can be used to load suitable cargo through the open roof.
Breakbulk Shipping
For cargo that cannot reasonably move in standard container equipment, breakbulk transportation may be considered. The cargo is transported as individual units rather than being packed inside a standard container.
This method may be suitable for particularly large or heavy project cargo.
Information Required for a Project Cargo Quote
Compared with ordinary FCL shipments, accurate cargo information is especially important. Before requesting a quotation, prepare:
- Cargo description
- Number of units
- Length × Width × Height
- Gross weight per unit
- Total weight
- Cargo photographs
- Packing method
- Pickup location
- Destination
- Cargo ready date
Technical drawings and lifting information can also be useful for complex cargo.
Planning Matters
Project cargo transportation can involve equipment selection, trucking, lifting, terminal operations, cargo securing, ocean transportation and destination handling. Therefore, each shipment should be evaluated individually before the transportation plan is confirmed.
